Hands-on role for a mechanical fitter working on large rolling stock during a major tram overhaul project in Rotterdam. Work takes place at the Kleiweg workshop where trams are fully stripped, treated for corrosion and technically restored. The focus is on removing rust, repairing structural parts and correctly reassembling components. A role for someone who prefers practical, detailed mechanical work on vehicles rather than surface cleaning or assembly-line tasks.
Wat ga je doen
This role is day-to-day mechanical overhaul work on trams at the Kleiweg workshop in Rotterdam. The core activity is taking apart vehicle sections to access and remove corrosion, then restoring and reassembling those parts so they meet technical and safety standards. The work involves thinking through complex details: accessing tight spots, assessing damage, choosing the correct repair method and delivering a solid mechanical rebuild.
This job is not surface-only cleaning or repetitive line work. Corrosion often appears in hard-to-reach areas, so the role requires practical troubleshooting and hands-on problem solving. Safety and craftsmanship are central: work is performed on, in and under vehicles using hand tools and power tools, and completed tasks are recorded in the maintenance system.
Typical daily activities include:
- Dismantling and reassembling body and structural components
- Removing corrosion by grinding, sanding, brushing and, where appropriate, blasting
- Inspecting metal parts for wear, cracks or deformation and performing repairs
- Testing components for function and safety after repair
- Working with hand and electric tools in close coordination with other trades
- Documenting work in the workshop maintenance system
